At Maya’s Spark of Courage Foundation, we believe that the right story at the right moment can change a child’s life. Our mission is to inspire courage, hope, and healing in children facing serious medical or personal challenges through the power of uplifting stories and characters they can believe in.
What We Do
Children’s hospitals often lack the budget to maintain book libraries for young patients. Many rely almost entirely on donations. Maya’s Spark of Courage Foundation helps fill this gap. We donate brand-new, emotionally supportive children’s books to hospitals, schools, and underserved communities, ensuring that every child who receives a book feels supported, and encouraged.
Our flagship book, Maya the Malamute: A Spark of Courage, is based on the true story of Maya, a therapy dog who overcame incredible odds as a puppy and now brings joy to children at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Maya’s journey teaches young readers that no matter how small they may feel, courage lives within them.
Our Origins
Founded on April 3, 2025, and incorporated in the State of Iowa, Maya’s Spark of Courage Foundation was born from our family's firsthand experience with Maya’s remarkable resilience and our desire to share inspiring stories with children everywhere.
Together, we can bring comfort, courage, and connection to children who need it most—one book at a time.
